ASSIGNMENT

The exhibition Rijkdommen van Ver at Museum Kasteel Wijchen begins with the research of curator Justa Vuister. A recent archaeological excavation in Wijchen revealed that the Merovingians settled here in the early Middle Ages. During her research, she asked questions such as: Why did the Merovingians choose to settle in Wijchen? What do we know about the settlement? What role did Wijchen play in the trade networks? And how did gemstones, beads, and coins travel all the way from India or the Mediterranean region to Wijchen? These questions form the foundation of the exhibition.

The goal of the exhibition is to tell the story of the mysterious Merovingians and their trade routes. The exhibition design is based on recent finds discovered in Wijchen.

CONCEPT

DESIGN

When designing this exhibition, the assignment was to make it engaging for a broad audience, including experts, retirees, and (young) families.

To begin with, I optimized the route through the exhibition space, creating a clear starting point and conclusion. The exhibition is built using acrylic panels, a durable and fully recyclable material. Acrylic also has a sleek, glossy appearance that reflects the sparkle of gemstones. By arranging the panels in various colors and geometric shapes, the design evokes the different regions of the world from which the objects originate.

The finds are at the heart of the exhibition. They are displayed in glass cases, accompanied by information about their materials and provenance. Lines on the floor invite visitors to reflect on the distance between the objects’ places of origin and the site where they were discovered.

The story of the Merovingians is brought even closer through Sigrid and Alarik, who share stories about their lives in Wijchen during the early Middle Ages. Through them, you and your fellow visitors gain a vivid and personal impression of this fascinating historical period.
