ASSIGNMENT

Every material tells
its own story!
Springplank is an organization with a special mission: to help homeless people regain control over their lives. They do this not only by providing guidance and housing, but also through meaningful initiatives that offer opportunities to grow, learn, and connect. One of these initiatives is the coffee bar BAKKIE040.
At BAKKIE040, everything revolves around connection. Here, (formerly) homeless individuals are trained to become baristas, and visitors can not only enjoy a great cup of coffee but also donate a “cup of comfort” to someone who needs it. In this way, a warm cycle of giving, learning, and sharing is created, exactly what Springplank stands for.
BAKKIE040 is already located at Strijp-S in Eindhoven and now has a new venue on the TU/e campus. &lotte has been invited to design this new location, not only as a
stand-alone space, but also as a foundational concept that can be applied to future expansions.
CONCEPT
DESIGN
Everyone who comes to Springplank brings their own story, sometimes visible, sometimes invisible. These stories form an essential part of BAKKIE040. The interior is therefore designed to be welcoming, a place that creates room for stories, both big and small.
The focus within the interior lies on sustainable materials and furniture with a story. No less than 57% of the furnishings are reused, recycled, or second-hand. The bar stools, for instance, once belonged to another interior, while the wooden slats on the outside of the bar are made from discarded, sustainably sourced wood from Helmond.
Homely elements such as rugs, hanging plants, and comfortable seating make the café a warm and inviting environment. The layout is clear and well-organized, with different zones for every moment of the day: from active to relaxed, from high to low, from social interaction to unwinding.
The design is brought together through an art installation that intertwines the story of BAKKIE040 with that of its interior. Displayed on textile banners shaped like abstract houses, the installation features stories that reflect both the vision of Springplank and the narrative behind the space itself.
