FROM HIDDEN WORK TO VISIBLE STORY

FROM HIDDEN WORK TO VISIBLE STORY

Hoogendoorn specializes in sanitary installations, water supply systems, and drainage technology. Work that most people rarely think about in daily life, simply because it usually disappears behind walls. Yet behind those walls lies a world of technology and craftsmanship that is essential to the way we live, work, and function.
And that very invisibility became the starting point of this project. For their new office building, I was asked to create spatial wall installations throughout the interior. Not standard wall decoration, but a translation of Hoogendoorn’s DNA. For me, this was an opportunity not just to fill a space, but to make the company’s story tangible.
That is why I deliberately chose not to use oversized logos or explicit branding. Instead, I developed a visual language that reflects who Hoogendoorn is and what the company stands for without having to state it literally.
Copper pipes are inseparably connected to Hoogendoorn and therefore became the foundation of the concept. A material that normally disappears behind walls was now brought to the forefront. The pipes were transformed into wall racks, furniture, signage, and presentation elements. With a subtle sense of humor, the design not only made the company’s daily work visible, but also highlighted the craftsmanship, strength, and pride behind Hoogendoorn.
And for a family business that has existed for over 100 years, a tribute to its history could of course not be left out. That is why the past was also given a place within the design: a gallery wall filled with memories, stories, and milestones from a century of craftsmanship. A place where employees and visitors can literally pause and reflect on everything that has been built over the years.
What makes this project especially meaningful to me is that it goes beyond design alone. It demonstrates how powerful a project becomes when different disciplines collaborate and strengthen one another, thanks to the close cooperation between management, marketing, and the interior architect.
In that sense, this project perfectly reflects the ambition of &lotte: creating stories that people can immediately feel and understand, without needing much explanation.
