ASSIGNMENT
A good guideline makes it easier to develop a suitable solution
The Leidsche Rijn College school building in Utrecht was designed by architect Wiel Arets. Its refined architecture is characterised by a predominantly grey colour palette. The school's management expressed a desire to introduce more colour into the interior. The challenge, however, was how to do so thoughtfully, ensuring that any interventions would complement the existing architecture without disrupting the building's sense of calm and identity.
CONCEPT
Colour was introduced to the school step by step through the development of a colour handbook. The handbook outlines which colours can be applied, how they can be used, and which combinations work well together, supported by examples and reference projects.
In addition, a series of supporting interior elements were designed to bring colour and identity to the school environment. These include wall quotes, a presentation wall for student artwork, colour accents in the main corridors and display windows, and a renewed, welcoming entrance.
At the same time, the school's management wanted to create space for the creative subjects to encourage students to shape their own surroundings. Students were invited to add colour to the school's waste bins through graffiti, contributing their own creative expression to the interior. Together, these interventions have created a school environment that not only introduces colour, but also reflects the creativity, involvement and identity of the school community.
